Smoking/Tobacco Products

We recognize the hazards caused by exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, as well as the life threatening diseases linked to the use of all forms of tobacco. These procedures and instructions cover the smoking of any tobacco product and the use of oral tobacco products or “spit” tobacco. Direction applies to both employees and non- employee visitors of Teachable Moments Services Inc.

TMS employees will follow the applicable laws, regulations and bylaws that apply to smoking in the workplace or in public areas.

All employees of TMS are asked to follow these procedures and guidelines when smoking while on shift.

1. No use of tobacco products will be allowed within TMS facilities at any time.

2. Smoking will only be permitted in the designated smoking areas

3. All materials used for smoking in this area, including cigarette butts and matches, will be extinguished and disposed of in appropriate containers. Supervisors will ensure periodic cleanup of the designated smoking area. If the designated smoking area is not properly maintained (for example, if cigarette butts are found on the ground), it can be eliminated at the discretion of management.

4. No tobacco use in any company vehicle.

5. There will be no tobacco use in personal vehicles when transporting individuals of TMS.

6. Breaks- The supervisors will discuss the issue of taking breaks with their staff, both smokers and non-smokers. Together they will develop effective solutions that do not interfere with the productivity of staff.

7. Staff are not to smoke while participating in individual outings. Smoke breaks must be taken before or after an outing in the designated smoking area of TMS residences.

8. For out of town trips, the supervisor will discuss appropriate and safe expectations with staff that smoke to ensure that proper safety measures are met for both staff, clients and others.

9. Staff that smoke are not to smoke within at least 20 feet of any non-smoking individual served by TMS.

10. As soon as staff are finished smoking they must wash their hands.
