Working Alone

Introduction: Teachable Moments Services Inc. Is committed to ensuring the safety of the individuals we support, employees and volunteers. On some occasions TMS employees do work alone and in these instances, we have several procedures in place to ensure safety.

Definition: According to the Occupational Health & Safety Regulation, to work alone or in isolation “means to work in circumstances where assistance would not be readily available to the worker a) in case of emergency, or b) in case the worker is injured or in ill health”

At TMS “working alone” usually applies only to the night shift.  During outings/activities a second staff member may not always be in direct attendance. If suitable assistance is not readily available from community members, this may constitute working alone.

Purpose: This policy is put in place to ensure that employees working at TMS are aware of procedure(s) to keep themselves and others safe while at work and when working alone.

Policy:  At TMS we ensure that:

  • An on -call supervisor is available 24/7 to respond and support employees who may work alone.
  • The on-call supervisor will be notified immediately when potential safety concern(s) arise while working alone.
  • All members of TMS management are trained on the content of the WorkSafe BC Working Alone Manual and are aware of potential risk(s) and how to reduce them.
  • All out of town trips and rural trips made without two support persons (e.g. staff or approved volunteer) must be approved by the on-call supervisor.  When possible additional staffing should be provided and/or arrangements will be made to mitigate risks when staff could be isolated or without readily available assistance.
  • Upon hiring all employees are trained on safety procedures that will help ensure their safety when working alone.
  • Emergency information is available in all TMS facilities and vehicles.  Emergency information will be taken on all activities and outings.
  • Employees working alone will have access to, or will carry, a communication device. Communication devices include phones (landline/portable phones) and cell phones.
  • During shift exchanges at nighttime, employees leaving the evening shift will be observed getting into their vehicle by the staff coming onto overnight shift.
  • All facilities windows and doors are equipped with a locking device.  Employees working alone check to secure all external doors and windows when commencing their shift and prior to leaving.
  • Interior and exterior lighting is in good condition and functioning to properly illuminate all areas of facilities.
